KULA Yoga 200 Hr. Teacher Training

One of my Favorite and NYC (if not the whole world’s) most respected 200 Hour Teacher Trainings… Once again I’ll be bringing a module of Self Myofascial Release - ‘Holy Roller’ - to the curriculum. If you’re looking for a serious yoga school, this is the place. We’re intelligent, thoughtful, attentive and intentional (just like how Kula in sanskrit means Intentional Community)

From the Kula Site

So…you know that you are in love with the practice and you have secretly (or openly!) been dreaming about doing a 200 hour teacher training for the past year (or more). You religiously study with your favorite teachers, pine for more information, and perhaps even fiddle around with teaching your friends, lovers, family, co-workers and pets. The time has finally come to formalize that education and see what it takes to take your dreams public! This training will offer you the first steps on a lifelong journey of developing the craft of becoming a teacher. Kula’s foundational training is designed to help you acquire the building blocks you will need in order to continue your education over the next several years. This training is fundamental and is meant to be the cornerstone of your teaching career. We will fill your tool box with all of the necessary elements you will need in order to teach a basic Kula Flow class by the time you graduate. This training is meant for students who have a desire to be on their feet teaching, not for students looking to deepen their practice but not use their voice (which is also good, but then this is not the right training for you). Expect this training to be heavy on anatomy and hands on adjustments, and expect to spend a LOT of time on your feet practicing your newly acquired skills.

Jnana Yoga - Knowledge of the Details

Asana-Lab Master Class

The foundation of Tantric Yoga, through Kashmiri Shivaism are the Shiva sutras.  These sutras begin with two beautiful concepts. The first is that this world is a manifestation of absolute consciousness, the second precept being that knowledge of the details is bondage.  This practice teaches us that we are all one - not of one, but one single collaboration, and that learning about our individuality creates the illusion of differentiation and separateness. However, as Tantra goes on to teach, these perceived differences color our experience… in order to understand their illusion we must first learn their details.  You have to know the rules one might say, in order to break them.

The practice of Jnana Yoga is the practice of learning, experiencing, playing with, and ultimately understanding the intricacies, the details, the depths of these bodies we are working with.  It is a rebuke of the cliche that we are ‘not our bodies’ and a celebration of the fact that we are not JUST what we see of our bodies, that we are a joyful manifestation of the Absolute, as these bodies.  And as such, it’s our right and maybe even duty, to learn all we can about them, so that we can come to understand their universal truth. Come expecting to move with, to experience, and to notice the details.   We will alternate between a creative vinyasa flow, and hot-seat style posture lab, designed to both study the details of form, and play with the experience they hold.

Holy Roller Master Class

Holy Roller Master Class

Your soft-tissue and myofascial system intimately connect your muscles, tendons, bones, nerves, blood vessels and organs.  They keep a detailed record of your past, affect you in the present, and influence your future. Our holding patterns, habits, go-to stances and even beliefs create and shape our form.  Movement practices, like yoga, move and work the body in an amazing and useful way. However there is more work to do. Self Myofascial relief is a practice of using specially designed tools to access, differentiate, explore and ultimately release adhesions and restrictions.  The Holy Roller perspective incorporates using this work to explore the beauty and full nature of these physical forms.

Join Sensei Derek Cook - biomechanist, structural bodyworker and internet ordained Reverend as we explore the science behind SMR, and the techniques that can bring significant and lasting relief to this body we use and work in our asanas practice.  This workshop will take a large picture / full body perspective and include some in depth discussion of the system at play, and how to heal them.

Art of Adjustments - Teachers Workshop

Thoughtful adjustments and hands on assists are an important and rapidly disappearing skill when it comes to the yoga room these days.  The pendulum has swung from the days of sitting on the kurmasana of a student in order to flatten them out, to attempts at guiding through only words.  This workshop will give both experienced teachers and those newer to the front of the room, the format to turn any shape into an opportunity for deep physical and energetic dialogue.  We will discuss the ground rules of adjusting, how to set and work from clear intention, how to see the bodies in front of you and unpack what you can do to be of service, and even explore some of classic and funky adjustments to add to your tool box.  Come with or without a person to adjust and a willingness to get down to it. Expect lots of hands on work, and communicating with old and new friends alike.

Holly Roller Teacher Module

Join VIBE yoga and Sensei Derek in this 20hr Teacher Training Module designed to allow you to offer Self Myofascial Release integrated yoga classes. Learn to bring the healing and restorative art of SMR to any variation of asana classes - from dynamic and athletic practices to slower more thoughtful movement, self bodywork is an amazing addition to your movement offerings.

In an asana practice, the physical work is that of activating muscle and soft tissue. We use the shapes to train, explore, engage, even ‘stretch’ the body. This is an important element of the practice and a part of that healing. There is beautiful and valuable work in there; a potential for growth and a possibility to be and do more. However as thoughtful and attentive as we may be in movement, there are still patterns, habits, old beliefs and practices held tight in the tissue under the skin.

The Holy Roller class is a way to bring the therapeutic practice of Self Myofascial Release (SMR) to our yoga mat and practice. Simply defined, SMR is a method of bodywork through which tools are used to develop greater ranges of motion and mobility throughout the entire physical form. The effects of this technique are translated through the muscle fiber, the connective tissues surrounding and investing the muscle, nerve, CNS (central nervous system) and even skin and adipose tissue.

FRIDAY 3/22 5:30 PM - 9:30 PM
SATURDAY 3/23 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
SUNDAY 3/24 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Organizing Chaos - An Asana Lab

We are forged in the crucible of trauma.  Our bodies: simply a response to the demands put upon them;  the pushes, pulls, stresses, loads, and abrasions of all sorts.  We are organized along the lines drawn into tension by every step we take. Every movement, every stance, every shape and transition ripples through us and leaves its imprint.  We are a beautiful and complicated outcome of all we persevere. While this permeates each of our layers, from the most subtle, outward - we will look at the body. In this asana lab, we will bring this - Growth as a Response to Trauma - eye to the sticky places.  As a group we will examine where we feel restricted, bound up, unable to reach, and explore new strategies to move more freely and practice as our whole selves.  Bring on your least favorite shapes, your Arch Nemesis of Asana and together we’ll take a methetocial and layered approach to unpacking what’s held within.

30-Hour Yoga Alliance CEU

The pendulum of Yoga’s diverse offerings in the West now regularly includes the slower, introspective breeds of yoga & mindfulness practices. Yet we modern beings are so often drawn down the YANG path of action in these 24/7 times we live in whether willingly or because that’s “how it is” — often doing and accomplishing more and more – yet overlooking key moments to slow down, drop in, and refill our own wells.YIN Yoga serves as a powerful antidote to address the demands and pace of The 21st Century Digital Age.  Over our two weekends together we’ll gather for this YIN Yoga Teacher Training to explore The Art of Deceleration. In the first weekend we’ll review YIN’s foundational elements and benefits by practicing the key traditional asanas, modifications & breathing techniques. During the second weekend we will cover a spectrum of pertinent topics to strengthen the understanding & articulation of each subjects’ relevance in language, mood and delivery, with a relevant practice session during the second weekend’s curriculum topics.

Unpacking Chataranga

Maybe the most ubiquitous and yet still mystifying of poses in the modern day yoga class, chaturanga has garnered quite the reputation. It’s a heat builder, it’s a strength based posture, it’s dangerous, it’s useless, it’s crucial, it’s what makes a vinyasa flow… It’s the shoulder shredder, the widow maker… Chaturanga can be a phenomenal opportunity for full body engagement, energetic unfolding and a physical manifestation of resolve and attention. Lets reclaim this shape and learn to work with, not around it. In this workshop we will break down the elements of a successful and healthy asana. We will learn the biomechanics of the shape, technical drills and warm ups, modifications and how to truly embody this complicated asana. Some movement, some discussion, lots of opportunity for questions and knowledge bombs.

Join Sensei Derek for a weekend on the Hudson river, near Pawling NY in the height of beautiful fall weather, to bring the summer to a close.  Learn techniques to take care of, get to know, and heal yourself while escaping from the city to our georgous retreat center just a quick train ride away.

We will spend our days with a morning practice, fresh and healthy meals, and time to workshop, learn and apply some of my favorite healing and self care techniques.

Arrive Friday afternoon and get settled - take a dip in the hot tub or just sit on the deck and enjoy the view - before we convene for a deep evening practice incorporating the RAD Roller Self Bodywork tools.

Saturday Morning we will wake (early-ish) for a shorter dynamic practice to start our day of otherwise easy going activities.  Lots of free time to connect with each-other or yourself, walk around the property - explore the rustic barn... or hang out with me in the hot tub.

We'll have an afternoon workshop to dive into some interesting stuff before nap time.

Evening practice and then dinner...

Sunday morning we'll start the day with our last flow and take out time wandering back to the city.  If a trip to Beacon to check out the world famous DIA art museum is interesting to you, we just might keep the weekend going on a littler longer as we explore together.

This will be a small and intimate gathering, so the 5 rooms will fill up fast.

The hips are the major pivot point of the body, transferring forces from the ground, through your spine, and generating strength into your upper body. Melt away tightness from your hips through your hamstrings and down to the souls of your feel with holistic self-bodywork that fuses movement and meditation with the use of specially-designed tools. Restore balance to the back of the body by releasing tension in the deep lateral rotators, the outer and inner leg lines and especially the hamstrings and quads allowing the legs to more easily transfer and absorb ground force. Release the tension in lower back and deep hip flexors, psoas for example; promoting mobility and stability in each step. Walk away more grounded and stronger in your stance.

The Way You Move

Come for one workshop or take the whole series.

This body we are in is amazing and complex. Those of us who love to move, whether in yoga asana, dance, running, or strength training know - to some extent - that there are layers going on under the surface that never seem to end. Join biomechanist and body nerd ‘Sensei’ Derek as he takes you on a tour of your awesome machine, studying the anatomy and function and the understanding movement applications they hold. Learn how to move more efficiently, effectively and with a new level of ease.

This workshop series is designed not only for yoga teachers, but also for trainers, coaches, movement professionals and dedicated students interested in deepening their understanding of the body and their asana practice. We will break the body into segments, studying the structures therein, the way they move and work together, and how each piece is integrated in asana. There will be light movement, lots of discussion and even some handouts.

Budokon Summer Academy

The Budokon MMA University operates under two different training models.  We host national 3-Day Academy Weekends, often hosted by our Kancho Cameron Shayne, or other Black-Belted Professors.  We also have a handful of local, Extended Program Academies.  These are spread out trainings that take the material covered in the weekends and divide it into smaller sessions, allowing students to spend the time in between to practice and integrate this material.  The result of the extended program is an equal if not greater knowledge base as the intensive weekends, all the while continuing to integrate these teachings into our daily lives.  Students commit to the entire program, and show up for each-other as a strong and supportive community.

We will be meeting the following dates:

Sat July 18th 7pm
Sun Aug 2 7pm
Sun Aug 16th 7pm
Sun Aug 23 1pm
Sat 29th 7pm
Sun Sept 20th 7pm
Sat Sept 26th 7pm
Sun Sept 27th 7pm

Each session will be 3 hours.
The module will be a $300 investment. Drop in classes are available for students who are familiar with the Budokon system yet unable to attend the entire academy.

After three successful academy modules students are ready to test for their next belt level.

Hands-on Adjustments are a much-loved and fast disappearing part of a thoughtful yoga class. The connection and information that can be conveyed through competent and insightful hands is invaluable, and the skills needed to do this kind of work are specific and teachable. Join 'Sensei' Derek as he takes us through a mindful and hands on session based around self and partner  work to develop an understanding of the power and care available to teachers of all levels.

Come with your favorite postures, and/or assists and get more information on how to offer them to others. Come with postures you've always wanted to be able to put hands to, and learn creative and intuitive options to bring to your classes.

This workshop is perfect for teachers, new and experienced, and equally interesting for students who are just looking for a deeper understanding of postures, and even how to receive and respond to the hands of their teachers.

Cost $40 ($35 Before May 2nd)

Budokon NYC - Academy Extended Program
